Tomah Health Coordinates Healthy Aging Expo

Tomah Health Physical Therapist Sheena Voge, D.P.T., left, instructed Anna Mae Rudolph of Tomah during a complimentary balance screening offered during the Healthy Aging Expo in Tomah Oct. 3. The screening used a Biodex Balance System that Tomah Health uses to help identify a person’s risk of falling, which is the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older residents.

Aging is a natural part of life, but staying healthy while a person gets older is a vital part of the equation.

Tomah area residents got a chance to learn how to stay healthy while aging during the annual Tomah Health “Healthy Aging Expo” held at the Cranberry Country Lodge in Tomah Oct. 3. “There are a lot of services that are specifically geared towards seniors in our area and it’s really important for seniors to have this information,” said Tomah Health community health educator Whitney Sanjari. “We facilitate all these organizations that serve this population in our county and help bring that information together into a one-stop shop.”

Nearly 30 vendors provided a wide range of health and wellness educational topics including blood pressure, balance and body mass screening. “They have a lot of interaction with various community members, and it helps get the information and services that they have out to the population that they need to reach.”

Sanjari said seniors always enjoy attending the annual fall event. “They love it. They can’t believe it’s free and they usually learn information that’s really helpful for them or things that they didn’t know. A lot of times it’s that catalyst that can help move them forward with some of those things that we a lot of times put off,” added Sanjari.

Area business professionals also provided presentations focusing on Power of Attorney for Healthcare, Hospice and Palliative Care, Wills / Trusts, Medicaid / Spousal Impoverishment, Dementia Education, and Funeral Planning.

Complimentary food and door prizes were also provided. Tomah Health has held the event for more than 20 years.
