Quality Care When You Need It Most

“I enjoy caring for patients when they’re not feeling well and helping them to feel better. That’s important to me.”
-Suzanne Downing, Director of Emergency Services

Should you or your loved ones ever suffer from an emergency, or urgent, medical condition, rest assured Tomah Health is ready to treat you. Our Emergency/Urgent Care Department is staffed by ER physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and a highly specialty trained nursing staff.

Tomah Health uses the latest technology and provides quality, personalized care when you need it most. The department includes two trauma/cardiac rooms and six general treatment rooms.

Should you require a higher level of care, our mission is to stabilize your medical condition and arrange transfer to the appropriate referral hospital via one of the several helicopter and ambulance services we use.

Recertified as Level IV Trauma Care Facility

The Wisconsin Dept. of Health Services has recertified Tomah Health as a Level IV trauma care facility. Originally certified in 2009 as a Level IV facility, Tomah Health provides stabilization and advanced trauma life support in the event a patient needs to be transferred to a Level I or II Trauma Care facility under the statewide trauma care system.

“It should make the public feel confident that if they or their family members need to come to our facility after a traumatic injury that our staff is well prepared and highly trained to care for them,” Tomah Health Emergency Services director Suzanne Downing, DNP, RN said of the new three-year certification.

The certification was the result of a visit to Tomah Health by Dept. of Health officials.

Emergency Services VS. Urgent Care FAQs

Q: How much does it cost?

A: Our clinical staff will determine the level of care (Urgent versus Emergency) that is most appropriate for your condition. Emergency Room/Urgent Care charges will include a physician fee, a facility charge and a charge for any tests or procedures that were conducted.

Q: How long will I have to wait to see a physician?

A: Emergency Room patients are always seen first and our goal is to see every Urgent Care patient as quickly as possible. If your condition changes or your symptoms become severe, please speak to a nurse. At times, Emergency Care patient volume increases, causing wait times to lengthen. We do monitor wait times and make every effort to ensure a speedy visit. We also provide bedside registration to ensure prompt care and collect required registration information.

Q: What is Urgent Care?

A: Urgent Care is defined as care that is needed for a “bothersome” illness or injury, such as minor coughs, colds or sprains. The injury or illness is not life threatening and waiting for care will not cause a significant risk to the patient.

Urgent Care hours are Mon–Fri 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. & Sat–Sun & Holidays 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Q: Why did my bill have Emergency Services billing when I asked to be seen in Urgent Care?

A: Your status depends on your medical condition and the physician’s examination. Not all services are provided under Urgent Care billing. Please review the prior question for the definition of Urgent Care.
